A reflection on a cold winter's morning listening to Fleet Foxes

Today I woke up early and made coffee. I stepped outside to take the bus to work, as it was bone-chillingly cold.

The cold woke me up and made me feel alive. It also reminded me of a freezing (-30ºC) evening in late January when I was probably 15 or 16, where the boys and I walked around with a speaker listening to 'Talk Talk'. We came back inside after a 25-minute walk near the train tracks in the suburbs, close to farmlands. It was serene and beautiful, and upon reflection, very Canadian. I was trying to explain the feeling and smell of a -30ºC night to some friends I had made in Pittsburgh (one from New Jersey, and the other from California). While it gets cold in Pittsburgh, it doesn't frequently get that cold. In trying to reframe my disdain for cold weather, I am appreciative that not everyone gets to experience what I have.

When we did warm up inside, we put on 'Fleet Foxes'. I am currently listening to this album as I warm up by my desk and edit my paper. Maybe you can enjoy this album this weekend, too.
