John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' is a classic album. I love this album, which is not a controversial opinion. It is widely accepted that this album captures a momentous time for one of the Jazz Greats (🐐?). One of my favourite aspects of this album is how free it sounds, without getting into the annoying free-jazz territory that can quickly erode casual/enjoyable jazz listening. Something about this album pulls you in and keeps you listening. Maybe this is because this album taps into the same esoteric stuff that makes meditation great, or spending some time in the sun great (spiritual connection). The instruments just sound so good. It makes you want to whistle. I could go on...
However, the reason why I made this my pick of the week is because Christmas time is coming up. My grandfather (Stoney) loved jazz, Coltrane, and talking music with me. The last Christmas that he was alive for, we watched (for a while) a documentary on John Coltrane that he had recorded from cable TV. We both fell asleep on the couch because some Christmas wine was consumed during dinner. Watching (and dozing to) this documentary was one of my favourite memories of time spent with Stoney, and among my last. I am thankful for the time spent with my loved ones, and I am looking forward to seeing my family for Christmas. This album is spiritual to me for these reasons, but also because it makes me feel like flying.
